GOSSIP AND SECRETS

“You look lovely, Eve.”

Eve turned her head to see Jolene come over and talk to her at the reception. They sat her with some of the employees from Fierce. She’d met them in the past so she didn’t feel as if she was a stranger to them all.

It’s not as if she could sit with her family. Though she was sure no one would have had a problem if she was sitting with Shay and Ethan Andrews, but they really weren’t her family.

Hope, Devin and Haylee were in the wedding, along with Liam O’Malley and Ella Fierce-McKinley.

“Thank you,” she said to Jolene. “You look lovely too.”

“I’m an old hat at these weddings. I’ve got a closet full of dresses that I’ll probably never wear again.”

“I’m sure with as many weddings as you’ve been to or had a part in, no one would notice one dress from the other,” Kelly said at the table. Kelly worked with Cade doing marketing and social media. She’d met her before at Kendra’s bridal party along with the other women at the table. No men were seated here and she was happy about that.

“You make a good point, Kelly,” Jolene said. “You look nice too. You all do. How many of you are single besides Eve?”

She watched as four hands went up along with Kelly’s. No reason for her to lift her hand. It’d be a lie if she did, but not only that, the way Jolene phrased it, she thought she’d get a pass.

There was part of her that would have loved to have Ben with her today. To get him on the dance floor again to not only have fun but to hold her in his arms.

This was only the second wedding she’d been to with the Fierce family though weddings had been happening left and right.

“Are you going to try to set us up too?” Kelly asked. “Who is your next target? We haven’t heard.”

“Oh, that person knows who they are,” Jolene said, their eyes locking. She smirked.

“It’s you!” Kelly asked. “How come you haven’t said anything?”

“Not much to say,” Eve said.

“Just like Ben. He avoids me too. He can’t run from me forever and Mason can’t keep saving him either.”

She figured there’d be no reason for Jolene not to say Ben’s name. After Ben told her everything from Easter, Jolene was aware they both knew who the targets were. Not to mention, it came up around Shay, and from what Hope said, Jolene would have talked to Shay to get any information that day too.

She couldn’t remember ever having to keep so many facts straight before in her life of who knew what and when.

It was getting tiresome and she was positive she wanted to put an end to it.

Sometimes it felt juvenile to her, like gossip and secrets from other people.

She’d put that life behind her and yet here she was feeling some of it again.

“I’m not sure what you’re talking about,” she said. Ben never said anything to her about running from Jolene or hiding behind Mason.
